To be fair, the N64 and systems like it took stuff from pixelated 2D to full 3D polygons. Now we've been having 3D for like 25 years and it's really not improving that much per year. N64 was a GIANT leap. The first AC to Odyssey is barely noticeable compared to that.

good example actually. AC odyssey had a stunning graphics quality, but the overall design was kinda sad and boring. Their focus on realism and natural style disabled any option for them to really create iconic scenery that you really want to take in. an issue i often have with games from Ubisoft. they just feel very heartless.

The more graphically realistic a game gets, the more the lore in the game should be realistic. AI in Assasins Creed is weak as fuck.

Yeah, because for 1996 that was AMAZING. For 2020 we have dozens of game that look exactly the same. Sure they have a different paintjob but the graphic quality has remained pretty much the same in the last few years. There's very few games that have memorable graphics, and the ones that do usually have it because their graphics are unique and not just "Good".

I believe it's all about the milestones reached. Before, we had 2d games, we couldn't even chose a path, just go from left to right through platforms most of the time. Suddenly we had a world to explore and choices to make every second. That surely beats the all new experience of better shadows.

Ac 3 remastered hardly looks any worse than odyssey.. albiey ac 3 doesn't tax the fuck out of your cpu.

depends on the style of graphics you choose... graphically marios style is just as good as it was when it launched (maybe a few more polygons wouldnt hurt) but it does what it does for that world... assassinscreeds tries to be more realistic and judging by that reaction (i never played it) it could be better for that world

I have the feeling devs tried more to get the best game out of their technical limitations and create a game that feels good and plays good. Today the there are basically no restriction and it comes down to tome and effort. (Not saying 20-30 years ago you didnt need to put effort ant time in game development.) Many games today just feel half assed and way to unfinished.
